I am prepared to pinpoint the exact moment that The Living Daylights loses any and all hope of being a great James Bond film. Ok, not really. The new model Bond is a dangerous, hard-edged brooder. His eyebrows are furrowed rather than saucily raised. A View to a Kill is, as we saw last March, a totally wretched film… taking the series in another direction was most definitely the right choice. And this is actually quite similar to what the writers decided to do with Bond when Daniel Craig came on board for Casino Royale.

Unfortunately, though he is an excellent actor in the right role, much of the blame here rests with Dalton himself. Dalton flashes us both the Murder Smile and the Pedophile Smile. The Murder Smile occurs in moments when Bond is relishing a kill, or the prospect of telling his boss to go fuck himself, or insulting an incompetent fellow agent, and other such joyful moments.

The Pedosmile, on the other hand, is reserved for Kara during their creepy courtship, especially when he takes her to an amusement park in Vienna. There is an extended montage of the two of them on roller coasters and bumper cars and the like, and they share their first kiss in a ferris wheel as Kara carries a large stuffed animal that Bond won for her. With other actors, it might have been cute. Those helicopter moms are going to kick your ass.

In the old days, geneticists kept careful catalogues of specific characteristics and used these to diagnose genetic disorders.

Today geneticists tend to diagnose by genetic testing.
