Bluetooth is a very good thing, once everything is correct. The solution is for makers of the Bluetooth in-car systems to stop using only one security key for all their units, but that would probably cost them money, he said. Trifinite is currently studying whether unauthorized Bluetooth intruders could do anything more serious than listen in or offer driving tips. Herfut said it's not possible for an attacker to do something really serious such as disabling airbags or brakes, but he believes there may be other implications to his group's hack.

It's possible, for example, that an attacker could access a telephone address book once he has connected with the Bluetooth system, but Trifinite will have to conduct more research before it can say for sure whether this could happen, he said. The best way to avoid being "Car Whispered" is to simply connect the in-car system to a Bluetooth phone, because only one such device can be connected at a time, Herfurt said. Bluejacking is harmless, as bluejacked users generally do not understand what has happened and hence they may think that their phone is malfunctioning.

Bluesnarfing: It is the unauthorized access from a wireless device through a Bluetooth connection between cell phones, PDAs and computers. This enables the attacker to access a calendar, contact list, SMS and E-Mails as well as enable attackers to copy pictures and private videos. Bluebugging: It allows attackers to remotely access a user's phone and use its features without user's attention.

Car Whisperer: It is a piece of software that allows attackers to send audio to and receive audio from a Bluetooth-enabled car stereo. Further research is underway whether Bluetooth attackers could do anything more serious such as disabling airbags or brakes through this kind of attack the researchers are also investigating about possibility of an attacker accessing a telephone address book once the connection gets established with the Bluetooth system through this kind of attack.

Among the four above-mentioned attacks, Bluesnarfing is claimed to be much more serious than Bluejacking. There is quite a few Bluetooth carkits that use random passkeys that are generated for every individual device during the production process.

Carkits that are integrated with a full infotainment system could use and sometimes already do use the infotainment system's UI for acquiring a passkey from the user. For questions about the Car Whisperer application, feel free to ask Martin Herfurt. Recommendations Downloads People Involved back to trifinite.
